Four New Degree Programs
Health Care Administration, Human Services and Communication Programs Now Offered
DES MOINES, Iowa, July 28, 2010— The Kaplan University Des Moines campus is now enrolling students for its health care administration and communication bachelor’s degree programs, as well as its human services program that offers an associate and bachelor’s degree. The four new programs are being offered in a blended-learning environment, combining online and campus-based classroom instruction.
The programs expand the campus’s allied health and arts and sciences offerings. Current campus offerings include a bachelor’s degree in health science and associate degrees in medical assisting, medical office management and interdisciplinary studies.
“These new degree programs offer our students more options when pursuing their educational goals,” said Jeremy Wells, president of Kaplan University’s Des Moines campus. “We are preparing our students to enter into some of the most in-demand fields in the Des Moines community.”
According to the Occupational Projections, a report by the Iowa Department of Workforce Development, Research and Analysis Division, medical and health services managers are expected to increase by 15 percent, human service assistants by 20 percent and public relations specialists by 13 percent between 2006 and 2016.
The four-year bachelor’s and two-year associate degree programs are designed to provide students with the knowledge, technical skills and work habits to pursue a wide variety of entry-level positions in their field of study.
The health care administration program provides students with a solid foundation in the core disciplines of health care administration and management. Courses focus on the principles and practices of health care regarding administration, management, law, economics and policy. Graduates of the health care administration program may seek employment in health care positions including care coordinator, account manager, practice administrator and case manager.
The human services program is designed to provide students with the practical skills to make a positive impact on people’s lives in many areas of human services including mental health, social services, education, rehabilitation, group and community work, nursing homes, court systems and public policy. Graduates of the associate degree program may pursue a position as a social service assistant, child advocate and adult day care worker. Bachelor’s degree graduates may seek employment as a case manager, human services administrator and child welfare worker.
Students enrolled in the communication program will focus on developing strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills applicable in any career field. The interdisciplinary approach combines both theory and application, enabling students the opportunity to gain a critical understanding of social issues, new media, and effective writing and speaking skills. Communication program graduates may seek employment in a broad range of fields including public administration, advertising, public relations and international business.
